Yes it's dirty, and they all speak Mandarin. Yes, it's technically communist. And yes, it can get expensive. But the germans, the americans, the japanese, the world is going there as they have been for the past 5 years. Go for your Mandarin classes, hook up with a language partner, because if you don't, you're insignificant.
Work has been pretty good. Except it's like selling premium ice cream half way across the world when you've never been there. Price and quality are no longer areas you compete in, in a mature product and market. There's a little something else that people by your ice cream for, and it's not for love.
